The Woods fielded another youthful side as they took on unbeaten Staines Town at Chestnut Avenue, and ran out impressive 4-1 winners.

At 22, James Shipperley was the oldest player in a team which averaged just over eighteen years, and the “old man” was to respond with a two-goal performance.

Northwood pressed from the start, with Elliott Buchanan and Jerome Hall in outstanding form up front, rarely giving the visiting defenders any peace, and it was Elliott who slotted home to give the Woods an tenth minute lead.

The other half of Woods’ lively front pair, Jerome Hall, added a second on 25 minutes when he shot past Staines keeper James Courtnedge.

Staines did have an opportunity to pull one back before the break, when they were awarded a penalty kick, but Jordan Kiffin was unable to beat Bill Fishenden in the Northwood goal.

Seventeen-year old Terry Hogan was enjoying an excellent game in defence, along with Nicky Pearce, and defensive colleague James Shipperley put Woods three goals up on the hour, when he coolly side-footed a spot-kick into the corner of the net.

The visitors manage to get on the scoresheet five minutes later, though the goal was a little fortuitous, in that the ball took a deflection to beat Fishenden.

Liam O’Keefe substituted for the fit-again Lee Holland, who had a good game in an unfamiliar right-midfield role, and with ten minutes remaining the Woods grabbed goal number four. James Shipperley powered a bullet header past Courtnedge following a pinpoint Buchanan corner.

That was to be the last of the action for Buchanan, who Dave Nolan then replaced with 15 year old Jake O’Meara, but it was a case of “job done” as Northwood moved into second place in the Capital League.
